I was aware of De Laszlo, but never expected to have the chance to see him at work. Such an opportunity is remarkable and fun, thanks so much for sharing it.
Though he is said to have used Poppy oil, and it does appear that something is in the paint, I couldn't see a palette cup on his palette. I've noticed the same with a lot of Sargent photos. (Charteris claimed Sargent didn't use a medium after a bit of turp in the lay-in). DeLaszlo did appear to be mixing something into his paint, maybe his white, while standing outside the studio door.

As for the mahlstick, if you wish to catch a remarkable use of one on film, watch "Portrait of Jenny" with Joseph Cotton and Jennifer Jones. Robert Brackman is the painter in the scenes of the painting being executed, and he must have half a dozen ways of putting it to use.
