Villa le Rose Sketches

The walls at Villa Le Rose. 25 x 35 cm, oil on panel.

Winter has set in and pushed me indoors so I’m currently enlarging the small sketches from this summer for shows next year. This was the last batch of Tuscan plein air sketches from the warm October we had there. They are all painted at the beautiful Villa le Rose property just south of Florence.

  1. Marc,
Nice group of Villa le Rose sketches. I really enjoy the first one a lot, a nice play of shadows and curves and the perspective really works. And the last two- beautiful- a real sense of depth. I’d love to read more about how you prepare your working surfaces… anything related to the technical side of painting would be a real help. Thanks again, I always check your website to push me on and motivate me. Best regards,
    Jeremy

PS: love the orange underpainting bleedthru

  3. Marc,

Nice collection. Love the composition in the first frame (walls outside the villa). And the light in the last frame (#4) is particularly evocative: I can smell the early evening dampness emanating from the stone walk. Hope you’ll bring the finals to Sag Harbor this summer.

  4. Love your work! Beautifully designed and believable images. I admire the way you put down the paint. It gives an impression of confident marks being made…and depicting what needs to be shown, without getting fussy or into tight rendering.

I haven’t been painting outdoors very long, and need to purchase an umbrella that will stand up
to the wind, etc. The main problem seems to be that the wind can cause an easel and everything connected to it, to be turned over and contents spilled. Maybe there is no perfect umbrella.

If you have any thoughts or recommendations regarding an umbrella, please let me know.

    • Hi Dick, Thanks for the compliments. I’ve never used an umbrella, so I wouldn’t have any idea sorry. I’ve met Russian painters with very sturdy metal ones. They’re black on the inside and white on the outside. But I’ve never seen them for sale in the west.
